The Zulu iklwa or Assegai

The Zulu iklwa or Assegai was a short, wide-bladed stabbing spear, or sword-spear, popularized by King Shaka Zulu during his military reforms in the early 19th century. It was designed for close-quarters combat, replacing the longer throwing spears that were previously used. The name "iklwa" is derived from the sucking sound the spear was said to make when withdrawn from a wound.

The use of various types of the assegai was widespread all over Africa and it was the most common weapon used before the introduction of firearms. The Zulu, Xhosa, and other Nguni tribes of South Africa were renowned for their use of the assegai primarily as throwing spear, however Shaka Zulu used the shorter stabbing spear as secondary weapon after throwing their long speers.

This particular iklwa is 400mm overall with a cutting blade of 260mm and at its wides is 48mm.
